How to Find a Restaurant That Serves Authentic Chinese Food

Most people will eagerly share that one of their favourite cuisines is Chinese food. Unfortunately, the majority of these individuals haven’t ever experienced traditional Chinese fare, though. Rather, they have been provided with dishes that either have been watered down or customised to fit local tastebuds. Well, if you are in the mood for some food that is as authentic as possible, you have come to the right place. Simply follow these tips for finding a restaurant that will take you on a true culinary journey:

Look for Restaurants That Mention a Region

If you see a dining establishment that simply advertises “Chinese food” then you are probably in the wrong place. See, China is a vast country that is made of various culinary regions. This is why you should only head to restaurants that claim to focus on just one specific region. Take, David’s in Melbourne, for instance. This eatery has a menu that consists of dishes that are largely from country Shanghai. So, you can be quite certain that you will be treated to traditional food here.

There is a Sharing Atmosphere

In China, you don’t find too many people ordering individual dishes for themselves. Rather, dining out consists of a more communal affair. So, large portions of food are brought out with each person provided with their own bowl of rice. You will then proceed to use your chopsticks to take the food from these dishes and place them in your bowl. If you go to a restaurant that encourages this type of dining, then there is a good chance that you have found a decent one.

Know Your Dishes

Most people are tricked into thinking that a particular dish has Chinese origins when this is the farthest thing from the truth. The only real way to ensure that you are eating something authentic is to do a bit of research yourself. Look for foods that are eaten on a daily basis or are sold as street food. Make a note of these dishes as well as some of the ingredients. Then, when you head to the restaurant make a comparison to see if the menu really holds up.

Look Up the Owners or the Chefs

Now, you may have some trouble trying to find the chef that works at a particular restaurant. It should be a bit easier, though, to do some research on the owners. Look at what their background is and what their passions in life have been. Interestingly enough, you can tell a lot about the food that is being served by examining the person who owns the restaurant. If that individual is committed to serving his or her customers authentic food, then you are more likely to be treated to traditional dishes.

If you are really committed to eating authentic Chinese food, then there is some effort involved. In the end, though, you will find that it will pay off when you taste some truly delicious food. At least now you know what you should look out for to ensure a traditional experience.
